What is a gyrocopter?

  • A gyrocopter, also known as an autogyro, is a type of rotary-wing aircraft that operates using autorotation.
  • Unlike a helicopter, the engine of the gyro spins the propeller instead of the rotor.
  • The rotor on top is self-propelled through a process known as autorotation, which occurs as air flows through it.
  • As the engine does not directly power the upper rotor, the pilot can glide to safety should the engine fail as the gyrocopter enters autorotation.
